Happy 10th Birthday, Google!
And since everyone keeps asking what we’d like for our birthday (besides cake and party hats) — the first thing we thought of was a nice new server rack.
A very special logo is up on the Google homepage today to commemorate the occasion, adapted from the original picture (note the exclamation point):
Google’s been touting this birthday for the past week or so, with a cool AJAX-ey timeline that seems to be increasing in entries as time goes on. Having visited the Denver Google offices before they closed, I’ve seen firsthand what a fun, amazing place Google is to be, and I have a great amount of respect for the company and what they’ve accomplished in a mere ten years (putting aside the big-brother like eeriness of them knowing anything and everything about me… *ahem* Molly…).
Are you a Google fan? Did it revolutionize your life? Should they go bankrupt Monday morning? I love feedback. Comment, people. Comment.
Happy 29th Birthday
Today is my birthday. I am 29 today. And when I opened my browser the Google icon had a birthday cake. I thought that was awesome. They linked some information I have them and recognizing it was my birthday they put up a Google cake icon. Then I noticed it went to http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2008/09/ten-years-and-counting.html which talks about Google being 10 years old. Funny coincidence.
Well happy birthday Google - they agressively search the web all day long and display minimalist style results for major speed, massive content, and a huge global audience. When my web site logs show me the MSN or Yahoo bots and spiders showing up even half the time of Google, I will know they are trying to compete. Until they its not even a chance to say you are as relevant with a system that gathers everything every hour of every day with a system that on once site I ran had the #2 and #3 competitors showing up as often in a month that google does in a day. Multiply that to every site and you have a massive spider gathering network. And that is where you can then do your algorythms. If your routines are better but your data is older, your results are going to be off. Its a matter of odds.

What does a search engine need to be the world’s most popular having over 1 trillion web pages indexed after 10 years since its activity began? –The answer is not that simple. It needs lots and lots of features to satisfy everyone’s needs, starting with a cool friendly logo that attracts at the first glance and continuing with multiple language support, AdSense, Image Search, Toolbar for your web browser, a large official blog, Maps with traffic information, Search for mobile including the iPhone, SMS service, Desktop Search, Finance utilities, and why not, a brand new and advanced Internet browser that has to be called Chrome.
Today is Google’s birthday, when it celebrates 10 years of activity, and we all want to congratulate it wishing its team many hugs and a friendly “Happy 10th Anniversary, Google!”.

Happy Birth Day to Google - Live Long Google
Hi Google many many happy return of the day
The Google doodle tradition started a long time ago (in summer 1999, in fact) when Larry and Sergey put a stick figure on the homepage to signify that they were out of the office at Burning Man. Nothing against stick figures, but our logo designs have become rather more varied since then. Today you’ll see a special design that commemorates our 10th birthday. We’ve incorporated a little bit of history by using the original Google logo from 1998. And since everyone keeps asking what we’d like for our birthday (besides cake and party hats) — the first thing we thought of was a nice new server rack. Our favorite search engine commemorates its 10th birthday and the Google logo that you see on the homepage was inspired from the original one from 1998, when the Google history started officially.
The world’s most popular search engine was registered as a domain back in 1997 and in 1998 was named the Top Search Engine by PC Magazine. In the same year it launched the Google Friends Newsletter and the first prototype for the homepage.
By 1999 press revealed the first positive reports about the Google search engine, while in 2000 the 10 language versions were released for French, German, Italian, Swedish, Finnish, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Norwegian and Danish, after which it became the world’s largest search engine with 1 billion URLs indexed, announcing also the Google AdWords service and the Google Toolbar. Google Image Search was launched in 2001, when the web index reached 3 billion documents.
One year after, Google News was launched with 4000 news sources, while in 2003 it acquired Blogger.com, and launched Google AdSense.
The year 2004 was full of innovation for Google, as it brought the Official Google Blog, Gmail, Google SMS, Google Desktop Search, and many, many others, reaching 8 billion web pages index.
In 2005 It launched Google Maps, the Search History feature, iGoogle, Mobile Web Search, Google Earth, Google Talk, Google Blog Search, Google Reader, the Analytics, and Gmail for mobile.
What happened in 2006 probably starts to sound more familiar to you all. There appeared Picassa, Google Chat, Google News on mobile, Google Finance, Calendar, Google Trends, Google Docs and Spreadsheets, and YouTube was acquired.
In 2007 you started to search through Google Maps’ traffic information, Hot Trends, Street View for Maps, Google Earth, and even Maps on the iPhone. Android mobile platforms became one of the hottest subjects of discussion in all newspapers.
This year, Arabians finally got the chance to search on Google writing their queries from the right to the left. Other cool new features introduced during this year include Doodle 4 Google, FriendConnect, Google Translate in 10 more languages, Google Finance real-time stock quotes, Google Search for the iPhone, Google Chrome web browser, and a big and fat URL index of over 1 trillion web pages.
Ten years and still counting…

Happy 10th birthday Google
For those who didn’t notice, today is Google’s birthday. 10 years old. Their exact birthday is a mystery to many with some saying it should be on the 15th of September and others providing even more dates. Google itself is holding a party today and counts the 27th their official birthday, so who are we to disagree. Either way, happy birthday Google!
Their front page also reflects the occasion.

September 27th - The day everyone finally wants cake
Google is 10 today as you might have seen from their special birthday logo or read on the Official Google Blog. Why today? Becuase September 27th is the day Google feels like eating cake.
As I wrote ealier this month, Google’s *real* birthday is generally thought to be on September 7 because that’s the day that Google Inc was officially created. However Google themselves say:
Google opened its doors in September 1998. The exact date when we celebrate our birthday has moved around over the years, depending on when people feel like having cake.
That day is today and Google is 10 (or 13 or 9 depending on your point of view). In celebration, Google have created a special tenth birthday page which provides a way to waste a few minutes of your times by answering questions such as “When was the first vegetable garden planted on the Google campus?”.
Perhaps more usefully, Google has provided a timeline giving a history of the company so far including a link to an interesting article by Danny Sullivan back in 1998 giving an overview of state of search at the time and reviewing the up and coming new player - Google. He writes:
If you pay a visit, don’t be frightened by the interface. One thing Google needs is a good facelift. Relevancy scores and other extraneous information can obscure the actual listings — but I did say this was an experimental service, right?
Google have come far in their “ten” years and have perhaps grown faster than any company ever before them. Yet Google isn’t perfect and has made a few enemies and drawn criticism from some, as I wrote a few weeks ago in my article, ‘Does Google need to grow up?‘.
Certainly the last ten years have been very good ones for Google. Will the next few be quite a good? Google haven’t yet made any big mistakes (in my opinion) and have continued to grow year after year at a phenomenal rate. But as they stick their fingers into more and more pies and the company gets bigger, mistakes are going to become more likely, their enemies will become greater and stronger and growth will become harder.
